What is a Portfolio?

Learn what a portfolio is, why diversification matters, and how FSL teams work like real portfolios.

Your Portfolio = Your Team

A portfolio is simply a collection of investments you hold. In the real world, this might include stocks, bonds, and other assets. In FSL, your portfolio is the set of stocks you drafted — your team.

Just like a fantasy sports team, the goal is to pick a group of stocks that work well together and outperform other players' portfolios.

Why Diversification Matters

One of the most important concepts in investing is diversification — not putting all your eggs in one basket.

Imagine you draft 5 tech stocks. If the tech sector has a bad week, your entire portfolio suffers. But if you draft stocks across different sectors — tech, healthcare, energy, consumer goods — a bad week for one sector might be offset by gains in another.

Sectors to Know

  • Technology — Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA
  • Healthcare — Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, UnitedHealth
  • Finance — JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Visa
  • Consumer — Amazon, Nike, Coca-Cola
  • Energy — ExxonMobil, Chevron, NextEra
  • Industrials — Boeing, Caterpillar, Union Pacific

Building a Balanced Team in FSL

When you're drafting, think about balance:

  1. Mix growth and stability — High-growth stocks can deliver big gains but are volatile. Stable blue-chip stocks provide a steady floor.
  2. Spread across sectors — Don't go all-in on one industry
  3. Consider market cap — Large-cap stocks are safer; small-cap stocks have more upside (and more risk)

The best FSL players don't just pick their favorite companies — they build a balanced portfolio that can weather market ups and downs.
